Coffee Skate Participant Numbers

The recording of attendance statistics dates back to 2001 when we were attempting to regain ice time that was lost when the sessions were cut from 3 hours to 1.5 hours, and sessions during State School holidays were eliminated (effective 18/06/2001). It was at that time we were first made aware of the problem of low participant numbers, and Iceworld documented that numbers for the last week under the old times were 6 on Tuesday and 10 on Thursday.

Iceworld Management again had concerns about our low participant numbers in October 2001 (especially Tuesday 9/10/2001) and this was conveyed to those present at coffee time on Thursday 11/10/2001.

What followed was a significant increase in the promotion of Coffee Club by ourselves and other participants, and other attempts to revitalise the sessions e.g. change of name from Coffee Club to Coffee Skate, introduction of the "Margie's Edges" group lesson (discontinued since Margaret's retirement), a designated beginners ice dance segment, and establishing the Coffee Skate Online website and weekly e-mail to registered participants. At the time a number of us were recording attendance numbers to monitor the effectiveness of these measures. These figures are reproduced in the data tables (see below) and chart (above), and are regularly updated. Click on the small chart to see a larger version.

What do these figures show?

  • Attendances are now consistently higher than the level that caused so much concern by Iceworld management
  • Attempts to even out the numbers between Tuesday and Thursday have been successful.
  • When the sessions during State School holidays were first cancelled there was a problem with people not coming back when Coffee Skate recommenced. This has been eliminated and we believe the main reason is better communication via the weekly email and web site.
  • Why are we still monitoring attendances?

Coffee Skate provides the only opportunity in Brisbane for adults and young children to practice and take lessons in figure skating and Ice Dance in a quiet, safe environment. The best way to protect the sessions is to make sure they are well attended and well utilised. In particular, if the sessions are ever allowed to decline as they did around 2001 the consequences could be serious.

What do you need to do?

Basically, come along and enjoy yourself. Every participant counts, literally. Each person who attends adds one to the number. Bring a friend and you add two. Also spread the word about Coffee Skate. And keep checking back here to see how the numbers are going.
