An essential text in the theory of genre. On a sample of television genres (current affairs interviews, live tennis), it shows how the very notion of genre is necessarily normative. Texts "innovate", they "play with" their rules, they are inherently unruly. Yet the intelligibility of unruliness depends upon invoking, through its denial, the rule broken.

The task of this book is the scrutiny of the normative processes that naturalise generic categories, its object is the uncovering of the politics of genre.
