Traditions and Mutations
in French Studies
The Australian Scene

Edited by Philippe LANE & John WEST-SOOBY

Brisbane: Boombana Publications, 1997.
(224 pages, 210 x 145 mm, PB, ISBN 0958668531)

The last two decades have been challenging and often emotional times for the Tertiary Education sector in Australia (and in many other countries). Great changes to the academic work environment have resulted from economic, ideological and political pressures. Academics around the country have been led to re-evaluate the nature of their discipline and, in some instances, to defend its very place within their institution. This has certainly been the case for French Studies, which has had to respond to urgent demands for increased economic efficiency, social and cultural relevance, internationalisation of programmes, technological innovation, and greater diversification and sophistication of subject matter and methodology. In short, French Studies has had to face the task of redefining its place within the new global culture.

The purpose of this volume, conceived in the wake of a Table Ronde held at the University of Adelaide, is to consider the current state of the discipline. It will help teachers and policy makers in Australia, and in other countries where French is taught as a foreign language, to assess clearly the nature of those challenges facing the discipline of French Studies at the dawn of the XXIst century. These essays will also be found relevant to the situation faced by sister disciplines, in particular other European Languages, and will prove of major interest to all educationists.
