Later, in retirement, he himself tried his hand at exploring, with all the resources of his delightfully elaborate and evocative style, "the Worlds of If". As well as offering us a fascinating insight into the dark side of Kelver Hartley's mind, many of these stories make engrossing reading in their own right. It is a pity that he did not persevere in this second career of his, and that he probably accepted much too readily the rejections he received from the publishers he approached. About the author

Kelver Hayward Hartley (1909-1988) was Foundation Professor of French at the University of Newcastle, Australia. Over the course of a long career as a secondary school teacher and academic, he endeared himself to successive generations of students by his devotion to his subject and his gentle eccentricity of character. His $2 million Bequest to his University, which annually provides for a number of students to undertake part of their degree course in France, is a unique and lasting testament to the life of an exceptional man.
