Kelver Hayward Hartley (1909-1988) was Foundation Professor of French at the University of Newcastle, Australia. Over the course of a long career as a secondary school teacher and academic, he endeared himself to successive generations of students by his devotion to his subject and his gentle eccentricity of character. His $2 million Bequest to his University, which annually provides for a number of students to undertake part of their degree course in France, is a unique and lasting testament to the life of an exceptional man.

This memorial volume, edited by Emeritus Professor K.R. Dutton (Hartley's successor and initial Director of the Hartley Bequest Program), includes a biographical sketch of Kelver Hartley, reminiscences by some of his former colleagues and students, and an extract from his creative writing.
