"Valérie Grünwald's readings of Baudelaire bring to it a sensibility that it has not known before. I say this, knowing that Baudelaire has attracted some of the great literary translators of the twentieth century, that there is a rich tradition of translations of Les Fleurs du Mal, and that every time these very difficult poems are tackled, new understandings are revealed, new interpretations generated.

"In the translation especially of poetry, choices must be made: a translator may choose to focus on one detail or another, may be more concerned with lexis or with syntax, or with the formal properties of the verse itself. In Valérie Grünwald's translations, she has sometimes chosen one option and sometimes another, according to what she wishes us to see in the poem. The results are a felicitous blend of fidelity and inspiration, but nowhere do we lose the sense that it is Baudelaire whom we are reading. This is a considerable achievement, and I congratulate her. Whether as familiars of Baudelaire in other versions, or discovering his work for the first time, her readers will embark on a voyage of discovery. Baudelaire will sometimes give them visions of the underside of life, and sometimes of its beauties, sometimes of evil and sometimes of flowers. Valérie Grünwald gives them pleasure as they go.
