Images of the City in Nineteenth-Century France

Edited by John WEST-SOOBY

Brisbane: Boombana Publications, 1998.
(272 pages, 220 x 155 mm, PB, ISBN 1876542012)

While modernity did not, of course, invent the city, the experience of urban life as alienating, disjointed and kaleidoscopic is largely the result of the Industrial Revolution and the social and cultural changes it wrought. This probably explains why, over and above the mythical aura that has in all times attached to the large metropolis, in the nineteenth century the city began to become a major theme for countless writers, artists and thinkers--a complex image, at the same time a defining feature, symptom and symbol of the modern condition.

A fascination for the emergence of this new perception of the city is what binds the following essays--the product of a conference held at the University of Adelaide in July 1996--which cover a wide range of issues and present a variety of perspectives. They collectively explore the complex relationship that establishes itself during the nineteenth century between the historical, the sociological, the ideological and the aesthetic.
