About the Toyota and Denso Cup

The Nihon Kiin, and sponsors Toyota and Denso, have created a new concept in Go tournaments. One amateur player will win his or her way through the qualifying rounds to enter the first round of the World Go Oza Tournament in Tokyo and play with the world's top professionals.

Brisbane, with its large, active go club, plays host to this event every two years.

Perennial champion Yiming Guo 8 dan won the Open in 2002 and 2004, but was pipped in 2006 by Sena Lee, the sister of the world #1 player Sedol Lee. Unfortunately Mrs. Lee will not defend her title in 2008.

Young, sweet, a killer on the go board. This describes the third placegetter in the 2006 Open, Joanne Missingham. Joanne will be there in 2008, by all accounts stronger than ever. Could this young lady be on her way to being the first ever Australian citizen to join the ranks of professional players?

Although the high goal of the tournament is to select a representative, Brisbane organisers had other goals, one of which is to foster interest in go. Lower level and young players have been welcomed as participants, making this one of the largest events in the Australian go calendar.

The Nihon Kiin has sent a teacher on past occasions, and so we use this opportunity by having the Friday before the match as a Teaching Day. Players can receive instruction, but the day is also open to the public to find out more about the fascinating game we all love.
