It might surprise some that I have chosen to showcase a book that was first published in 1983.
The reason is that I would place this book in the top 20 books that would make a significant
difference to the bridge student's game. (Some day I'll tell you about the other 19 too.) Mike Lawrence was a founder member of the high profile "Aces" bridge team of the late 60's and early 70's. He has two Bermuda Bowls, and is also a prolific bridge author, and this is not the only one of his books I'd place in that top 20. |

The book covers the following topics:
Evaluating common holdings, elastic evaluation, warning signs, evaluating good and poor hands,
and more.
An example of one of Mike's ideas is the "box" principle. Say your partner opens 1H and you
respond 2H, showing 6-9 HCP. You have "boxed" your hand in that range - a four point range.
If partner has 17 HCP for his opener, he could bash game, but you may have a poor six count.
Partner therefore bids 3H, invitational, and if you have 8 or 9 HCP you go to game. Your hand
is in the upper part of the box so you bid again. That was what your partner wanted to know. You can buy The Complete Book on Hand Evaluation for just
$23.10 including postage
within Australia.
This concept can be applied to many evaluation and bidding situations. This concept alone is
worth the price of the book.
