WHAT IS GO?

GO is a two-player board game which is over two thousand years old. The object of the game is to capture territory by making walls around vacant areas (intersection points) on the board. It is a fighting game with tactical and strategic elements. The players play moves alternately, as illustrated at left on a beginner 9 x 9 board.

The rules are simple to learn, but mastery can be a life-long study. You will never be bored in the playing and study of this fascinating game, which is capturing the interest of westerners everywhere.

GO is played professionally in Japan, China and Korea where tournaments attract substantial prize money.
The end of a game is illustrated at left. Black 28 points, White 27 points. B won by one point.

The World Amateur GO Championship is held annually in Japan, and Australia's representative is selected by results in national tournaments (points system).

Regular national events:

The Australian GO Championship for 2006 will be held in Brisbane in October 2006.
The NEC Cup (handicap tournament, prize money) will be in Melbourne in March 2006.
The Toyota and Denso Cup is a biannual event which is absolutely FREE to enter, and there are heaps of prizes to be won. It will be held in Brisbane in January 2006. Contact J.Hardy@uq.net.au
