Olien, University of Georgia.King GEORGE IV [George Augustus Frederick] 1845/c1864, the last Mosquitan ruler with the title of King, by 1860 the British decided to leave Nicaragua and signed a treaty with Nicaragua, the Treaty of Managua, establishing a Mosquito reservation which was to be considered an autonomous politcal entity, but within the boundaries of Nicaragua and changing the title of the Mosquito king to that of "chief" on the 12th of September 1861. Hereafter, George Augustus Frederick's title became "hereditary chief of Mosquito." George Augustus Frederic seems to have had an affinity for non-Indian women, having an infatuation with the white woman, Miss Bell, and he eventually married a black woman apparently late in his life, because the king was still a bachelor in the early 1860's. He died 1864 (27th November 1865?), without leaving issue, being succeeded by his sister's son.

The soldiers seized the government buildings and the archives of the Mosquito Reservation, and raised the Nicaraguan flag. The Nicaraguan commissioner, General Carlos Lacayo, gave as his excuse for attacking Bluefields that the Mosquito were being misgoverned by Jamaican blacks. Chief Robert Henry Clarence and his government were declared rebels, he was rescued by the British and carried on board a British man-of-war to Puerto Limon, Costa Rica, and then to Jamaica, where he was given asylum by the British and a pension for life. He died in the Public General Hospital of Kingston, following an operation, in January 1908.
