HRH DYMM Paduka Seri Sultan AZLAN MUHIBUDDIN SHAH ibni al-Marhum Sultan Yusuf Izzuddin Ghafarullahulahu Shahborn 19th April 1928 in Batu Gajah, Perak, 9th Yang di Pertuan Agong 1989/1994, 34th Sultan of Perak 3rd February 1984, officially installed on the 9th December 1985, Raja Muda Perak [cr.1-Jul-1983], educated at Government English School, Batu Gajah; Malay College, Kuala Kangsar; the University of Nottingham (Bachelor of Laws, 1953). He was admitted to the English Bar by the Honorable Society of Lincoln's Inn on 23rd November 1954, served as the Assistant State Secretary of Perak, later served as First Class Magistrate and as President of the Sessions Court, appointed to the following offices; as Federal Counsel and Deputy Public Prosecutor, Legal Adviser of the State of Pahang and later of Johore, as Registrar of the High Court of Malaya and as Chief Registrar of the Federal Court of Malaysia, eevated to the Bench of the High Court of Malaya in 1965, he was made a Federal Court Judge in 1973, appointed the Chief Justice of the High Court of Malaya 1979/1982, appointed the Lord President (now Chief Justice) of the Federal Court of Malaysia on 12th November 1982, Pro-Chancellor of University Science of Malaysia 1971/1984, Chairman of the Higher Education Advisory Council 1974/1976, Chancellor of the University of Malaya since 8th February 1986. He married 1955, HRH Tuanku Bainun binti Mohamad Ali, born in Pulau Pinang, educated at the St. George’s School, Pulau Pinang, and at the Teacher’s Training College, Kirkby, England from 1952 to 1954, Raja Permaisuri Perak, Raja Permaisuri Agong 1989/1994, Duli Yang Maha Mulia [cr.1984], and has issue.

PREDECESSORS AND SHORT HISTORY: Negeri Perak Darul Ridzwan established in 1528. The present sultanate traces its origins to Sultan Muzaffar, the eldest son of the last Sultan of Malaka. Because of its rich tin deposits, Perak constantly faced outside threats to its sovereingnty. The state was first ravaged by the Achinese in the 16th century.  After 1641, the Dutch attempted to establish a monopoly over Perak's tin trade by building forts on Pangkor Island and at the mouth of the Perak River, but without great success. In the 18th century, Perak was threatend by the Bugis in the South and the Thai in the north. The state was saved from Thai domination with the British assistance in 1820s. The growing importance of tin on the world market led to an influx of Chinese miners into the rich tin fields of Larut.  This development however destabilised the traditional Malya polity in the Perak River Valley.  In the 1870s, the state was torn by a succession dispute to the throne and war in Larut between feuding Chinese tin miners. This led to the British intervention in 1874 when they imposed the Pangkor Engagement on the Perak chiefs and took control of the state. Constant oppositon from the Perak Chiefs resulted in the assassination of the first British Resident and a brief war. The state later became a model for the develpment of the British 'residential system' and in 1896 became one of the four Malay states forming the Federated Malay States. The state is divided into nine districts and its major towns include, Ipoh, Kuala Kangsar, Taiping, Teluk Intan and Lumut. Kuala Kangsar is the royal town of Perak, while Ipoh is the administrative centre and state capital. For centuries, Perak was renowned for its rich tin deposits. It is believed that the state derived its name, which means silver in Malay, from the silvery tin ore. The Sultans of Perak after 1786 were the descendants of Sultan Ahmaddin Shah, the 18th Sultan of the State, who was also known as Marhum Bongsu. Descendants of the Sultan Ahmaddin Shah's three sons - Sultan Abdul Malik Mansur Shah (the 18th Sultan), Raja Inu and Raja Abdul Rahman - took turns to ascend the throne. On the death of a Sultan, the son was not the automatic successor although he could be made the new Ruler. Six people have the right to ascend the Perak throne upon the demise of a Sultan - the Raja Muda, the Raja Di Hilir, the Raja Kecil Besar, the Raja Kecil Sulung, the Raja Kecil Tengah and the Raja Kecil Bongsu. Although it is not automatic, the Raja Muda is usually made the new Sultan by the Dewan Negara Perak, which comprises dignitaries of the State. Apart from the six titled princes, there are several other dignitaries, all headed by the Orang Kaya Bendahara Seri Maharaja. They are the Orang Besar Empat, Orang Besar Lapan, the Toh Muda Orang Besar Empat, the Toh Muda Orang Besar Lapan, the Orang Besar 16 and the Orang Besar 32. They are appointed by the Sultan on the advice of the Dewan Negara to carry out specific duties entrusted upon them from time to time. The Dewan Negara functions as the Sultan's advisory body.
