PRESENT HEAD OF HOUSE: VACANT since 1988
 
PREDECESSORS AND SHORT HISTORY: The Kan'in-no-miya is the youngest of the four shinnōke (branches of the Imperial Family of Japan which were eligible to succeed to the Chrysanthemum Throne in the event that the main line should die out). Founder of the family in 1718, was HIH Prince Naohito, younger son of HIM Emperor HIGASHIYAMA, 113th Emperor of Japan, who was granted the title of Kan'in-no-miya and land worth 1000 koku by his grandfather, the retired emperor Reigen. This branch became extinct in 1842, but was revived by Emperor Meiji, in favour of HIH Prince Kotohito, the 16th son of HIH Prince Fushimi Kuniye. Titles were abolished in 1947, and the the family again became extinct in 1988.

HIH Prince Kanin KotohitoHIH Prince Kanin Kotohito, 6th Prince Kanin-no-miya 1872/1945, styled Kan'in-no-miya Kotohito shinnō, born 10th November 1865 in Kyoto, 16th son of HIH Prince Fushimi Kuniye, 20th Prince Fushimi-no-miya, married 19th December 1891 in Tokyo, Princess Sanjo Chieko, born 25th May 1872, died 1953, daughter of Prince Sanjo Sanetomi, and had issue. He died 21st May 1945 in Tokyo.

    • HIH Princess Kanin Hanoko, born 30th June 1909, married 1926 (div. 1951), Marquis Kwacho Hironobu, born 1905, son of HIH Prince Fushimi Hiroyasu, 23rd Prince Fushimi-no-miya, 2nd Prince Kwacho-no-miya, and his wife, HIH Princess Tokugawa Tsuneko.

HIH Prince Kanin HaruhitoHIH Prince Kanin Haruhito, 7th Prince Kanin-no-miya 1945/1947, Head of the Imperial Princely House of Kanin 1947/1988, styled Kan'in-no-miya Haruhito shinnō (to 1947), born 3rd August 1902 in Tokyo, married 14th July 1926 (div. 1951), Princess Ichijo Naoko, born 7th November 1908 in Tokyo, daughter of Prince Ichijo Saneteru. He died sp 1988.
