PREDECESSORS AND SHORT HISTORY:
Founded
in 1620 by the younger son of the Raja Jagannath Singh III of Porahat.
Seraikella is unique in that it was never conquered by the Mughals or
Marathas.
Even to the British, Seraikella never paid nazrana to them as
per the Peace Treaty of 1823, and the Sanads of 1899/1919. It
was a rent-free, revenue-free,
tribute-free State until the Merger into the Indian Union. The state
enjoyed the status
of an ‘A’ Class Princely State. With the blessings from the
family deity, Ma Paudi, a form of the goddess Durga, there was
uninterrupted rule (never an adoption) by 58 generations of Singh/Singh
Deos of the Singha dynasty spanning 8 centuries. It has left an
indelible
mark in various fields (chivalry, administration, art, culture and
dance, particularly the Chhau Mask Dance being the most famous) in the
annals of
Indian princely history. Seraikella has found a pride of place in its
cultural
heritage, primarily for Chhau. The legend
of Ma Paudi, the family deity, is intimately associated with the
vicissitudes of the history of Singha dynasty. It is a historical fact
that, since the
installation of Paudi Devi at Seraikella, the power and prestige of the
Seraikella House continued to increase and eventually eclipsed that of
the parent state of Porahat. The reign of Abhiram Singh,
the Fourth Ruler (who
brought back the goddess Ma Paudi from Porahat), is considered to be
the golden age of the state. Rulers were....

known as Seraikella; he quickly extended the limits of his dominion, to
the north he wrested from the ruler of Patkum-Kandra (Dumra), Dugni and
Bank Shahi Pirs, and to the north-east from Barabhum he seized on the
