born 30th June 1951, educated at Daly College, Indore; married 1976, Rani Anjali Devi, daughter of the Paranjpe family of Pune, and has issue, 1 son and 1 daughter.

PREDECESSORS AND SHORT HISTORY:  Founded in 1811. Rulers were...

  • Har Bhat Patwardhan, a Brahmin (priest) from the area of Kinkan rose to distinction in 1722 during the days of the second Peshwa, he was well known for his piety, saintliness and Vedic lore, he was ancestor of the Royal Families of Budhgaon, Miraj, Kurundwad, Sangli and Tasgaon (lapsed in 1848), he married and had issue. He died 1750.

      • Bramhibhoot Harbhat Buva Patwardhan, married and had issue.
        • Shrimant TRIMBAKRAO I APPASAHEB PATWARDHAN, founder of Kurundwad.
        • Sardar Govind Hari Patwardhan, founder of Miraj, he was granted the title of Sardar by the Peshwa, married and had issue.
          • Sardar Pandurangrao Patwardhan, married and had issue. He died at an early age.
            • Sardar Hariharrao Patwardha, successor to his father, but died at the age of 17 years.
            • Sardar Chintamanrao Patwardhan I, ruled at Miraj initially, but during one of his battles, he was rumoured to have died and his uncle then was crowned as his successor. When Chintamanrao returned he was angry and left the house with only an idol of Lord Ganesha and vowed to set up another Capital for his Jagir. As a result he established the city of Sangli in 1801.

  1. Shrimant GOPAL RAO RAMCHANDRA RAO PATWARDHAN 1811/1840, born 1799, married Radha Bai Fadnis, daughter of Fadnis of Pune. He died sp 1840.

  2. Shrimant RAMCHANDRA RAO GOPAL RAO [APPASAHEB] PATWARDHAN 1840/1897, born 7th November 1833, son of Antaji Madhavrao [Tatyasaheb] Yadhwadkar, adopted 18th November 1840 by the widow  of his predecessor, succeeded 18th November 1840 (#1), installed on the gaddi 7th January 1853, married 1stly Laxmibai, daughter of Hari Mahadev Godbole of Tasganv, married 2ndly, Janaki Bai, daughter of Manohar Joshi of Sangli, married 3rdly, 6th March 1861, Sita Bai, daughter of Nene of Shedbal, married 4thly, Parvati Bai, daughter of Apte of Pali, she died 30th January 1874, and had issue, 2 sons and 1 daughter. He died 12th January 1897.
    • Gopalrao Ramchandra Rao Patwardhan (by Janaki Bai), born 30th December 1853, died 13th February 1854.
    • Capt.(Hon). Sir Shrimant PARASHURAM RAO RAMCHANDRA RAO I [DHAJISAHEB] PATWARDHAN, adopted from the Chinchanikar branch of the Patwardhan family (see below).
    • Manu Bai, married 14th May 1861, Vinayakrao Narayan Joshi of Satara, died 13th September 1892, and had issue, 1 son and 3 daughters.

  3. Capt.(Hon). Sir Shrimant PARASHURAM RAO RAMCHANDRA RAO I [DHAJISAHEB] PATWARDHAN 1897/1924, adopted from the Chinchanikar branch of the Patwardhan family, Chief of Jamkhandi, born 1883, succeeded 1897, installed 4th June 1903, K.C.I.E. [cr.1913] (#2), took active part in France in 1915, during WW1, in 1918 he was granted a 9-gun salute and made Hon. Captain in the British Army, he as a supervisor of Red Cross in the Mesopotamia, married 1stly, 1900, Rama Bai Raste, daughter of Bala Sahib Raste, from the village of Vai, died 1st October 1907, married 2ndly, 12th June 1913, Damle, daughter of Damle of  Pune and had issue, 1 son and 1 daughter. He died 25th February 1924 (by being crushed under the feet of an angry elephant).

  4. Raja Saheb Shrimanta SHANKARRAO PARASHURAMRAO [APPASAHEB] PATWARDHAN 1924/1947 , K.B.E. [cr.1947], Raja [cr.1935], born 5th November 1906 and succeeded 25th February 1924, installed 1926, married March 1925, Shrimant Soubhagyavati Lady Lilavatibai Sahib, Kaisar-i-Hind Gold Medal, daughter of Shrimant Madhavrao Moreshwarrao Pandit, Pant Amatya, Chief Saheb of Bavda Ramchandra, and had issue, 1 son. He died 22nd August 1947. 
    • Raja Saheb Shrimant PARASHURAM RAO II PATWARDHAN (qv)
    • Dr. Indu Patwardhan, born 14th May 1926, educated at P.B. High School, Jamkhandi and Rajaram College, Kolhapur; achieved diplomas in Occupational Therapy, Homeopathy, Ayurvedic Visharad and Sangeet Visharad, awarded "Dalit Mitra" in Maharashtra State and "Tamra Patraprashasti" from Karnataka State. Dr Indu Patwardhan left home to join Gandhi's movement of Sabarmati in 1942, later was trained as a school teacher by Madam Maria Montessory, and was working at St. Columbia High School, Bombay for two months before being selected to join the then British India Red Cross and St. John Ambulance. After intensive training she was posted to Burma under active service during World War II and was the first Indian lady working actively in South East Asia and thereafter worked in military hospital, Poona. She was the joint lady camp commandant with lady Martten and was responsible for the rehabilitation of refugees and women abductees in Pakistan. Later she studied Homeopathy and started her own clinic in rural areas of Poona, worked with the Poona Women's Council, the troops aid committee. She was a founder member of Poona Blindmen's Association. In 1965 she started worked with leprosy sufferers and in 1970 established Anandgam for their benefit. She died 8th February 1999.

  5. Raja Saheb Shrimant PARSHURAM RAO II PATWARDHAN 1947/1952, born 1926, last ruling Prince of Jamkhandi, having merged his state in the Indian Union on 19th February 1948, married and had issue, 2 sons. He died 18th December 1953.
