Throughout this decade I was employed by Wang Australia; starting out as a word processing 
training officer and progressing through Customer Support Analyst, to management positions.

 

Jan 1986 Wang Australia Pty Ltd

(3 years) Federal Education Manager

Major Achievement

Expanded services to achieve a 400% increase in annual revenue over three years while maintaining expenses within budget.

Responsibilities

  • To schedule and provide Wang product training courses to the public and to customers. 
  • To conduct Training Needs Analysis and design training programs for customers. 
  • To act as relief instructor and conduct train-the-trainer workshops. 
  • To market and provide technical support and training for computer-based training packages and authoring systems. 
  • To recruit staff and develop high levels of performance to mutually agreed goals.

(3 years) Project Training Manager, Special Projects Office

Major Achievement

Implemented Wang's national training plan for (DSS) Department of Social Security's $100M contract on time and within budget whilst transferring Wang product knowledge and skills to DSS's national and state training teams.

Responsibilities

  • To design and outfit two Wang Education Centres in Canberra. To conduct contract negotiations on training issues. To recruit staff and develop high levels of performance to mutually agreed goals.
  • To design, develop and present tailored training to DSS staff (computer managers, operators, programmers and end-users). To monitor DSS-developed courses to mutually agreed standards.
  • To contribute to the design and development of training for other large training projects, eg: National Mutual, NSW Police, DHSS(UK), DSS (Sweden), Dept of Transport (Taiwan).

Major Achievement

Developed the training plan for Wang's successful $100M tender to the Department of Social Security.

Responsibilities

  • To design, develop and present courses including Wang WP, Phototypesetting, Systems Operations and WP administration and Wang Macro Language courses. 
  • To provide training consultancy and marketing for courses. 
  • To operate as System Administrator for two large mini computer systems (VS & OIS).

(8 months) Senior Instructor Australian Education Centre

Major Achievement

Instructional design and development of several 3 - 5 day courses.

Responsibilities

  • To develop and deliver various office automation and electronic mail courses incorporating adult learning principles. 
  • To schedule courses, register students and control billing. 
  • To typeset quarterly course schedules using Wang WP with typesetting commands.

August 1981 Wang Laboratories Inc.

(10 months) Instructor, Pacific Area Education, Sydney

Major Achievement

Together with a colleague, designed classroom and office layouts for Wang's Australian Education Centre, configured and implemented two computers for classrooms and office areas, designed and purchased classroom and office furniture, set up and documented security and System Administration on each system.

Responsibilities

  • To attend 10 new 5-day courses in USA, then deliver in the Australian Education Centre. 
  • To develop Australian content in corporate courseware. 
  • To present OIS and VS system management courses to Australian and New Zealand customers and staff.

(7 months) VS Support Analyst, NSW Data Processing Branch

Major Achievement

Successfully reoriented support colleagues away from traditional data processing solutions, towards integrated DP/WP solutions.

Responsibilities

  • To provide post-sale technical support for VS Office Automation customers. 
  • To assist sales people with demonstrations, exhibitions, seminars and road shows. 
  • To manage implementation of new office automation systems in customer sites. 
  • To develop interface programs between DP files and WP documents for customers. 
  • To present operator and administrator courses.

(3 months) Customer Support Analyst, NSW Word Processing Branch

Major Achievement

Developed and marketed package of conveyancing, litigation and patent attorneys' precedents using Wang WP macro language.

Responsibilities

  • To provide pre-/post-sale customer support to 73 legal customers. 
  • To assist sales staff with demonstrations and road shows for prospective customers. 
  • To assist customers with the design of new office procedures.
  • To design system management procedures.

(7 months) Training Officer, NSW Word Processing Branch

Major Achievement

Successfully established the position of first full-time customer training specialist, developing standard courseware for all Wang WP courses and administrative procedures for the job.

  • To control course bookings & confirmations.
  • To schedule courses.
