Rue...

Ruta graveolens
Rue
An ancient medicinal herb, rue was used as an antidote to poisoning and a talisman against witchcraft. It was the only herb to be blessed by Mohammed, and is central to many Arab, as well as Chinese, therapies. However, it contains a number of active principles which often cause sensitivity to light, and people can develop skin rashes after contact with the plant. The leaves are used homeopathically to treat phlebitis and varicose veins, and herbally for epilepsy, nervous complaints and uterine disorders. Its essential oil is used in perfumery and cosmetics. Small amounts of the pungent foliage is used for flavouring foods and alcohol drinks.

Rue is commonly found on dry, rocky limestone soils, and is cultivated in gardens as an ornamental shrub, often in blue, gold or variegated forms. It should be planted in full sun, and prefers well-drained soil with a little lime.
