A PETITION TO THE PREMIER OF QUEENSLAND

We, the undersigned citizens of Queensland, register our grave concerns about the Queensland Government’s offer to Indigenous Queenslanders of reparations for missing, unpaid or underpaid wages over the last century.

We believe that the Government’s offer is grossly unfair because:

• The amount offered to Indigenous workers is only a small fraction of lost wages
• The offer of reparations is limited to those who lodged claims by 31 January 2006
• Descendants of workers are not entitled to claim reparations for wages lost by family members
• And claimants must sign an indemnity which waives their right to claim their full entitlement

We urge the Queensland Government to put aside its current position and to act immediately to negotiate with Indigenous people to achieve a fair and just settlement which ensures that Indigenous workers and their family members are able to obtain their full entitlements.
