Commission Promotes Understanding of Links Between Mission and Justice

Brisbane’s Catholic Justice and Peace Commission has invited Ms Sandie Cornish, Social Justice Education Coordinator at the Broken Bay Institute, to deliver a series of talks and workshops on the importance of working for justice as part of the Church’s mission.

Ms Cornish will present workshops on Vatican II’s Pastoral Constitution on the Church in the Modern World and on the analysis of contemporary social issues in the light of Catholic Social Teaching at the Commission’s Archdiocesan Social Justice Gathering on Saturday 9 July.

The Gathering will be held at the Good Samaritan Centre, Lourdes Hill College, 86 Hawthorne Road, Hawthorne from 11.00 a.m. to 6.00 p.m.

Participants will also have the opportunity to share information about social justice activities with others from around the Archdiocese.

Lunch and afternoon tea will be provided and there will be no charge for participants.

Bookings are essential for catering purposes and can be made by either phoning the Commission’s Office on (07) 3891 5911 or by e-mailing petercjpc@uq.net.au/

Ms Cornish will also present an in-depth workshop on Catholic Social Teaching and the secular human rights tradition on Thursday 7 July at Justice Place, 5 Abingdon St, Woolloongabba from 10.00 a.m. to 4.00 p.m.  Cost of this workshop will be $40 ($30 concessions) and bookings are also required for this workshop.  All meals will be provided.

Ms Cornish will also present talks on the links between the Church’s commitment to social justice and its mission in the world at St Oliver Plunkett’s Parish, Cannon Hill on Monday 4 July and again at Sacred Heart Parish, Booval on Tuesday 5 July.  Both talks will begin at 7.30 p.m.  There will be no charge for these talks and no bookings are necessary.

The Commission’s Executive Officer, Peter Arndt, said that the Commission was keen to provide Catholics with more opportunities to learn about the Church’s social teaching.

Social Justice is one of the nine priorities of the Archdiocese and we want to help Catholics to understand what the Gospel value of justice means and how we might go about being faithful witnesses and agents of justice and peace in the modern world,” Mr Arndt said.

Ms Cornish was formerly the National Executive Officer of the Australian Catholic Social Justice Council and worked for the Asian Centre for the Progress of Peoples in Hong Kong.  She received a Licentiate in Social Sciences from the Pontifical Gregorian University in Rome and also has qualifications in economics and public policy.

For further information, please contact Peter Arndt on (07) 3891 5911 or 0409 265 476.
