SQUASH CLUB
Officer in Charge:
Major G. Davies, RAEC.

The Squash Club has had a very successful season. The First team remains unbeaten by any boys' service team while the College Under-18 teams have brought credit on themselves by winning the Army Junior Squash Championships. They beat the RAPC team 3-2, with McGowan, of 66C ("J" Coy), winning the decisive game.

A/T Deadman won the individual championship with A/T Evans as the runner-up. They both enjoyed a week in London watching and playing squash, sponsored by the Army, as their prize.

Five members of the Club were able to watch the semi-finals of the Bristol Open Championships in London. Apart from watching some very exciting squash, a pleasant night out was enjoyed by all.

The season's fixture list included several teams from across the Severn as now that the Severn Bridge is open we were able to play at Bristol and Cirencester.

Our most popular fixture was undoubtedly with Cardiff Ladies' Squash Club. Unfortunately we lost both matches, home and away, but the morale of the team never faltered and a most enjoyable evening's squash was enjoyed by everyone.

Although three of the team will be leaving at the end of the Summer Term there are plenty of players to come into the team. Another good season can be expected.

The teams thank Major Davies and all the other members of staff for their support of the Club.

Matches won: 17. Matches lost: 7.

SWIMMING TEAM
Officer in Charge: Capt R. D. Gowing
Coach: Mr. R. Bisson

On reflection this has been a very good season, but slightly disappointing in that we did not quite achieve the honour of being outright winners in the two main competitions.

In the last edition we mentioned the Inter-Company Swimming Gala. This was a great success and a closely fought contest with "B" Company as outright winners. The Senior and junior parts of the competition were won respectively by "A" and "C" Coys.

There were some good results at Oswestry for the Junior Championships. Kaye swam a record 200yds. breaststroke and Dows beat his own Individual Medley record by 1.7 secs. In the overall result we again came second to Bovington. Winter, Whiting, Walton and Campbell were chosen to stay on for the junior Inter-Services Team

It was a shame that there was no opposition in the Western Command Championships in the team events. Dows, Eldridge, Walton, Whiting, Kaye, Stafford, McCabe and Barton all swam in the individual events. The Lancashire Fusiliers beat us in the Water Polo.

There was a moment of panic when we thought that Kaye and Stafford having passed out from the College in July, would not be allowed to swim for us in the finals at Eltham, but all was well in the end.

The Army Championships have been a big event this term. Twice a day for the first ten days of this Winter Term was spent training in our outdoor pool‑trying to get fit and lose the effects of four weeks of home comforts! Talk about survival-we were certainly the fittest by the end. We so nearly pulled it off too, and might have been the Army Champions. The competition, which was held at Eltham, London, was tremendous. Capt Grainger and Mr. Bisson took us up to London for the event but it was bad luck that the breaststroke team was disqualified. However, the freestyle relay team, McCabe, Allen, Marsden and Eldridge, swam a magnificent race, achieving a new Army Record in 2 min. 29.2 sec. Well done.

We are now back on the Winter schedule, swimming once a week at Newport and two mornings a week on circuit training in the gym, under the watchful eye of Cpl Codd who makes sure we do our stuff!

We took a team to The Bishop Gore School, Swansea, who won every race and some of the team had a hectic evening at Newport swimming for the Maindee Club.

The new pool is very much in evidence with the roof superstructure now being erected. With luck we shall be using it this time next year.

The final event of this season is the Swimming Dinner‑but that does not need much arduous training, and we should get a full team turnout.

ASSOCIATION FOOTBALL
Officers in Charge:
1st XL Capt M. A. Pike, RAOC

With the camps coming at the beginning of the soccer season, the fixture list did not start until October and there has been little on which to base a sound assessment of the ability or potential of the College soccer teams.

A nucleus of the team from last year was available around which to build, and first impressions have been favourable. The stalwarts, Clarke, Keeble, Robbins and George, to name but a few continue to maintain their high standards of last season. Others, their contemporaries, appear to assume that first team status comes with seniority and show a marked tendency towards lethargy. This has been illustrated in the attendance at evening training sessions on Tuesdays and Thursdays when it has been rare to see the First Eleven complete.

HOCKEY NOTES
Officer in Charge:
Capt J. Barnes, RAEC
Assistant (Staff): WI
Skinner, RE
Assistant (Apprentices):
Sgt Rayner, REME

The season has only just got under way, preparation for the Apprentices' XI being greatly hampered by the early Autumn Camps. Nevertheless, there is every reason to hope for a successful season. There is much strength in defence in the form of Siddell and Simmonds, although we lose the latter at Christmas. Stamp, the captain, provides very necessary inspiration down the right wing and, provided that the inside forwards can cap their present good approach work with more decisive action when inside the opposing circle, the attack should ensure quite a few victories.

The first "big" occasion was the HMS Collingwood visit. After a very tough and equal first half, the College really piled on the pressure and were seldom out of the opponents' half. A goal was scored but, unfortunately, a penalty stroke was awarded against us a few seconds before the final whistle and the game ended in a draw, 1 goal each.

Disappointingly, the visit from AAC Carlisle was cancelled owing to the possibility of a rail strike, and heavy rain has also caused more disruption to the fixture list. However, we have November to prepare for the forthcoming key matches with our old rivals, Harrogate and Arborfield.

This season, the Western Command junior Tournament is to be run on a league basis. The four teams will play each other on a home and away basis and the Cup will be awarded to the team finishing at the top of the table. This is a welcome innovation as it will provide more competitive hockey for our younger, up-and-coming players who get very little until the Inter-Company Tournament in the Spring Term.

The Staff XI has started off in grand style and must be one of the strongest teams in Beachley for many years. As the season opened, the Henry Wiggin Six-a-Side Tournament was won at Hereford, with the help of two apprentices, Stamp and Siddell, and handsome trophies were presented to each of our successful players. Unlike the Apprentices' XI, the Staff have been more fortunate with their pitches during the recent wet spell, even though a couple of games have been played in pouring rain in which two bespectacled members were said to have played "blinders"-literally.
