Bailey Bridge CompetitionThis article is an extract of a recent email from Terry Evans to Mike Keeble, recounting the story associated with the photo below. Were you there? It was at 3 Trg Regt. Cove, August 1968. It was the "RE at Home" week-end. There was a competition to build a 30ft Bailey in the fastest time. All the squadrons put a team forward and we were chosen to represent 57sqn. The full corporal with the cup (we called him Gentleman Jim, can't remember his name) had a great idea of not building a "Launching nose" therefore saving time, but, causing a problem of spanning the gap. He decided to place planks under the bridge as a fulcrum, then you (Mike Keeble) were one of the lads who had to walk up and down the planks to keep 30 ton of bridge balanced as it was rolled over. It only went wrong once in practice. We pushed it over a little too fast and it hit the planks too quickly to give you and others time to get to the end; this to all our delight, but not yours and the others, as it sent you all catapulting into the air. You must remember that! The small L/Cpl was Tony Criddle. He was a right character. Thommo served with him again as a Sgt in Maidstone. The other was a Bob Stenning, a very serious fellow. I met him again when he was in the SAS and I was back at Training Regt. Great summer!!! Getting all nostalgic!! Back to Top
In the PubPhoto included in mail received by Mike Keeble from Terry Click on it to get a good quality image! This was taken on the 28th August 2000, in Alec's local, we obviously had to include "the Ladies". Mind you Sandra looks like she is wondering where Alec's hair has gone. George came to stay with me a couple of days, and this was on a visit to Alec's. The poor lad was working(12hr shifts and all) but we got him in between "Z'd" time. Back to Top
