Sunnybank Answer from Sunnybank 6.1: The John Oxley Library , P.O. Box 3488, SOUTH BRISBANE QLD 4101, is one of the best sources of Queensland historical information and will prepare an answer as soon as possible. J.H. (28 Feb 2002)

Sunnybank Question 7: The Sunnybank area is well remembered by people growing up in Brisbane since in its heyday as a new suburb, it was the venue for the 'The Oasis', and the 'Acacia' swimming pools in the 60's. The Sunnybank Pub was the 'out of town' venue for a really good night out and then of course was the drive in movies. Only the Sunnybank pub and motel remain. The older 'Mater Homes' still remain and are an example to what Sunnybank used to be.
Progress is essential and the suburb has grown and prospered and has grown up. Sooner than later, Sunnybank, will take its place with the older suburbs of Brisbane, south of the river.
It is always interesting to view the photos displayed in one of the entrances to Sunnybank Plaza and I often look and remember.
To-day, we have few reminders of the past, and that is sad, since all habitats have a history, and photographs are not enough.
The Sunnybank Historical Society, surely does a wonderful job.
One should stop when crossing the pedestrian bridge over Mains Road, in the midst of the shopping centres and see the green vista of trees, most of which have been planted by residents.
We still have here in our area, a few trees though that are originals from the original bush when Sunnybank was first settled.
Huge trees now but to date have caused no problems. We could lose them as a result of re-development since the few properties on which they still grow are very attractive to construction of townhouses etc..
Have a look at some of these magnificent gums on McCullough Street just up from the corner from Station Road. There are no preservation orders on them. I am not a Greenie as such, but trees like this shouldn't be allowed one day to be felled, just so someone can make a $ killing.
I appeal.

Sunnybank Question 11: I have found your site while looking for suppliers of Kamado ovens. Could you please advise of any suppliers?

RC 21 April 2003

Sunnybank Answer from Sunnybank 11.1: The http://www.sunnybank.info/retail/bbqs/index.htm page reflects the many types of BBQs used locally. The larger BBQ suppliers listed on this page, I am sure, will cater to the various needs of their clients. However, as with any specialised item of purchase, you may have to search in a specialised area. I trust someone with knowledge of this Japanese BBQ called a Kamado, will respond to your request.

Sunnybank Question 12: I am using the underground bore water in Sunnybank. I wondered if this water has been chemically tested? We fill our pool with the water and the children sometimes drink it (as does the dog.)

Sunnybank Question 13: Hello
I wish to know does Sunnybank have an official website online with lots of history and photos of what it was like in these dark years for us to learn a bit more about the history of Sunnybank?
J. (24 February 2004)

Sunnybank Answer from Sunnybank 13.1: The Sunnybank, seen from inner Brisbane, was originally described as the line of hills catching the early morning rays of sunlight just past Holland Park and Mt Gravatt. This Greater Sunnybank, probably takes up most of the present postcodes of 4108 and 4109. Today, the suburb designated by the Brisbane City Council as Sunnybank is only part of the Sunnybank of history. The history of the settlement of Sunnybank was collected by the Sunnybank History Society and this collection is available in the Sunnybank Hills Library. Some traditional history has been collected from scant records. I don' know how we can ever produce an official Sunnybank history. However, I have volunteered to digitise our local paper if the News Corp is willing to finance a history of News in Sunnybank Database covering the past few decades. www.sunnybank.info as a portal, and not a content provider, will link to any published and family suitable websites. Take a look as some of the excellent National and Victorian Library Photo links provided. However, our local community could do much more to place their and our history on public record from many unofficial personal websites of family records.

Sunnybank Question 14: Why isn't Les Atkinson Park joined up with Gaddes Park along the banks of Stable Swamp Creek?
DD. (7 March 2004)

Sunnybank Answer from Sunnybank 14.1: The integration of small fragmented parks will only occur with a strong push by members of the community.
One proposal was to join Les Atkinson Park to the the Oxley Common with a continuous walk and bikeway along a green corridor next to a stable creek bank for Stable Swamp Creek.
SS (8 March 2004)

Sunnybank Question 15: I'm a local resident and have seen the photos of early Sunnybank at Sunnybank Plaza. I note that they are supplied by the Sunnybank Historical Society.

I have a particular interest in one of them and would like to ask the relevant person more about the photo.

I have searched this site for a link to this Historical Society but cannot find one. Can you please tell me how to contact the Sunnybank Historical Society?

CC 23 May 2004

Sunnybank Answer from Sunnybank 15.1: Thanks for your question to http://www.sunnybank.info/community/asks/

Sunnybank or perhaps a greater-Sunnybank was an area that took in many of the suburban areas surrounding our current suburb of Sunnybank. Sunnybank was the area past Holland Park from the city centre and was the edge of suburban development.

The Sunnybank Historical Society served that area.

This website Sunnybank.info attempts to serve that same area.

The Sunnybank Historical Society has folded with all its possessions placed on display in the BCC library at Sunnybank Hills.

Many fine attempts are now being made to keep and make available historical community information, but they will continue to rely on a central provision of service.

My belief is that each family in the area, should claim a virtual place with their own informal and unofficial family website showing the past and the present and guiding the future.

If each family, community group and business built a website showing their part of the community then a portal / gateway / directory to that community such as Sunnybank.info could link together this virtual community and perhaps we can together build our real community.

Good luck with your search for the old photographs.

Sunnybank Question 16: Why isn't our longestablished local Sunnybank community portal http://www.sunnybank.info listed on the new http://www.community.gov.au ?
D.D. (10 April 2004)

Sunnybank Answer from Sunnybank 16.1: Good Question!

As thousands of Sunnybank neighbourhood locals know from their own experience, http://www.sunnybank.info generally responds to individual requests which leads to the building of a fairly uneven portal. Under some categories, a lot of links are available while under some other categories, the links are either not available or the old links are broken.

A more formal site like http://www.community.gov.au provides official, professional and reliable information more suited to the needs of the established civil society as drivers of change.

Another difference, is that http://www.community.gov.au serves the needs of Australia, whereas http://www.sunnybank.info attempts to serve Sunnybank residents and visitors in the worldwide neighbourhood. A community not just inside Australia.

http://www.community.gov.au is a good idea and has the potential to develop into a very useful website.

Sunnybank Question 17: I have just moved into the Sunnybank area and I don't know how to join my local Neighborhood Watch Group for my street?
E.C. (29 July 2006)

Sunnybank Answer from Sunnybank 17.1: Greetings Thanks for your question via http://www.sunnybank.info on joining a neighbourhood watch. Your local police station, at Mt Gravatt or the Police Beat shop fronts at Sunnybank Plaza or Garden City are good starting points. At one time, I did try to encourage the State Coordinator of Neighbourhood Watch to lobby for a comprehensive statewide website for contact and information, but nothing has so far happened in Queensland. You can see from http://www.sunnybank.info/community/awareness that South Australia and the UK have some good local websites. But, why not just start walking around your local streets and saying G'Day to very one you meet ?

Worldwide Answer from Sunnybank 5.1: I migrated from America to Sunnybank, QLD about 5 years ago and have since returned. There is a high Asian population in Sunnybank, higher than any surrounding area. I suggest you send your children to John Paul College in Daisy Hill, about 20 minutes drive from Sunnybank (where I attended high school). They have grades Kindergarten - grade 12, they have an international college for those who need to become more proficient in English before attending the main school. They are a very prestigious private school, very technologically advanced and there are also very many Asians that attend there. They also have buses that pick up in Sunnybank.
