A great page. You have really done a great job to help any newcomers who come to a place where we drive on the "wrong" side of the road, and have "upside down" light switches. I found it confusing at first, coming from England to Canada 42 years ago. <...> I thoroughly enjoyed your page <...> -- Arthur Hesketh (Jul 1996)

<...> As an American, I am finding your pages to be fascinating reading...They are also proving to be quite useful; I am preparing some pages to be distributed to attendees of an international workshop which I am chairing. Your pages are helping me to see my own land from another's eyes; because of them, I am including many things (e.g., information on taxes, driving practices, etc.) that I probably would not have thought to include otherwise. <...> -- Lynn Messing (Jul 1996)

As an American planning a trip to Australia next year I logged onto your site to see what Australians found most different between the two countries. Although some of the information was helpful (quite a bit was either incorrect or perhaps regional. I'm from New England), it seemed to me the site was basically an opportunity for Australians to take potshots at the U.S. I would never say my country is perfect but I just don't understand the current fashion for criticising everything American while at the same time a large part of the world struggles to emulate American behavior/entertainment/fashion etc. On a recent trip to Great Britain, I was constantly besieged by people wanting to tell me what was wrong with the United States (many of whom had never been. Your Aussie contributors at least have that going for them). I would never, for an instant, dream of telling a foreign visitor what I found wrong with his country, nor did I tell the British some of the things I hadn't liked about England. There were many things I didn't like, but many things that I did. I suspect the same is true of many visitors to the U.S., although it's not the current trend to admit it.

At any rate, I was a little disappointed to find that Australians suffer from the same prejudices as much of the rest of Europe and hope that the Australians who contributed to your site met with more tolerance while visiting the States than they seem to display. -- Paula V Coviello (July 2000)

Congratulations on your delightful site "US Survival Tips for Aussies." I just read it almost "cover to cover." I found all of it enjoyable, amusing, and I did learn quite a bit. The "Coke" issue stands out. I guess I didn't know as much about "Auzzie" accents as I thought I did. -- Kovacs, Andrea (Sep 2000)
